The way fans pay online is changing. From 2026, iDEAL is gradually being replaced by Wero, a new European payment solution. What does this mean for you as an organizer selling tickets? In this article we explain what Wero is, what's changing, and what to look out for.
Wero is the new standard for online payments in Europe. It was developed as the successor to national payment systems such as iDEAL in the Netherlands, Bancontact in Belgium, and giropay in Germany. The goal: one unified payment experience across Europe.
For ticket buyers the principle stays the same. They pay via their own banking app, quickly and securely. But behind the scenes the technology is changing. Wero offers several key improvements over iDEAL:
The transition from iDEAL to Wero is happening step by step. Here's what to expect:
By the end of Q1 2026, the iDEAL logo on checkout pages will be replaced by the Wero logo. This applies to all platforms and payment services that offer iDEAL.
In practice, very little changes for your ticket buyers. They still select their bank, open their banking app, and confirm the payment. The process is familiar — only the name and logo are different.
In the coming months, Wero will add features that iDEAL didn't have. Think of a built-in wallet for consumers and improved refund capabilities. For organizers this means more flexibility when handling refunds.
The switch to Wero is designed so the payment experience remains seamless. Your ticket buyers don't need to learn anything new. That means your conversion rate won't be affected.
A major advantage of Wero is that it works across multiple European countries. Organizing an event that attracts international visitors? They'll soon be able to pay just as easily as Dutch fans, using the same Wero solution.
With iDEAL, refunding tickets wasn't always straightforward. Wero promises direct refunds, allowing you to handle cancellations or ticket exchanges faster and more customer-friendly.
Short answer: nothing, for now. Payment service providers (PSPs) such as Mollie, Stripe, and MultiSafepay are handling the technical transition. If you sell tickets through a platform like Tickable, the switch is taken care of automatically.
A few things worth keeping in mind:
Yes. The transition is handled behind the scenes by your payment provider. Your ticket shop will continue to work as normal.
No. They still pay via their own banking app. Only the logo and name change.
The transition is gradual. Throughout 2026, iDEAL will be replaced step by step by Wero. The exact timeline varies per payment provider.
Wero only replaces iDEAL (and similar systems in other countries). Credit cards, PayPal, and other payment methods remain available alongside Wero.
The switch from iDEAL to Wero is a logical step toward a European payment standard. For you as an organizer, little changes in day-to-day practice, but you do gain extra capabilities: faster refunds, international reach, and a future-proof payment solution.
